Home or away?
For many students moving away from home is an exciting prospect. But others find it really daunting. And for some, depending on their family circumstances, it’s simply not an option.

So what should you do? Stay at home or move away? Only you can make the final decision, but we’ve put together a three-step plan to help you reach the decision that’s right for you.

Step 1 – Choose a course
Any undergraduate will tell you that it doesn’t matter where you’re studying if you’re not enjoying your course. So choosing the right course should be your top priority. Once you’ve researched courses, you can look at which colleges or universities offer the course you want.

Step 2 – Research colleges/universities
Once you’ve decided which course you want to study, you should always make sure you visit the colleges or universities that offer that course. Every higher education institution holds open days where you can tour the campus, meet current students and talk to course lecturers. You should also spend a bit of time finding out about the local area – the nightlife, the accommodation and, importantly for students, local transport links. You can find out the dates of all higher education institution open days by going to www.opendays.com.

Now you’re in a really good position to make your choice…

Step 3 – Weigh up the pros and cons
There are plenty of good reasons to stay at home to study, so don’t feel that you have to move away, particularly if your local institution provides the best course in your chosen subject.

Staying at home – the positives

  • it’s cheaper than renting student accommodation
  • you avoid the hassle of moving and travelling to get home
  • it allows you to keep close to family and friends
  • home comforts and stability
  • you get the 'best of both worlds'.

Staying at home – the negatives

  • it can restrict your choice of course
  • you might have less independence
  • other friends may move away to study.

Moving away from home is often the first step to an independent life. It can be a great adventure and gives you the chance to broaden your horizons by experiencing life in a different part of the country.

Moving away – the positives

  • it gives you more independence
  • you can discover a different part of the country
  • it brings you close to campus
  • there’s a greater choice of courses
  • you get the chance to live with other students.

Moving away – the negatives

  • you will be further away from home and family
  • it may be more expensive
  • you may have to live with other students!
